The lake is trowel-shaped water body hence named Khurpatal in the local language. A 'khurpa' is a hindi word for a digging tool used in gardening. The color is emerald which looks heavenly and offers the best pictures. The lake is home to a variety of fish which makes it a perfect destination for angling and fishing. A lot of fishing activities are carried out throughout the year at Khurpatal lake which suffices for the fish-eating population in the area. The fishing here is done in the traditional way and is a family activity.
At a distance of 12 kms from Nainital, Khurpa Taal is a pristine lake situated at an elevation of 5500 feet. Laced with tall trees, the lake is considered ideal for fishing owing to its crystal clear waters and abundance of freshwater fish. Unexploited by tourists, the lake is a secret haven replete with bounteous nature.
Undulating hills and tall trees encompass the lake on all sides and provide picture-perfect backdrops for beautiful snapshots, especially during sunrise as the lake glistens like a diamond when the rays of the sun fall on it.

The nearest railway station to Nainital is Kathgodam, around 23km away. Regular trains ply to Kathgodam from Delhi, Dehradun, Lucknow, Agra, Mathura and other cities in North India. Buses and taxis are available outside Kathgodam railway station. A bus ticket cost INR 60 from Kathgodam to Nainital. And from there get a bus or cap to reach Jeolikot, Nainital, Uttrakhand
